As a shapeshifting spy raised in the city of Gower, Vel is accustomed to navigating the supernatural dangers and rival monster factions of her home. For years, she has worked in the employ of whichever groups wield the most power and security. When their influence starts to slip, she disappears, reemerging as a fresh young spy with a different identity and a new faction to serve under. The balance of power in Gower is always shifting, and Vel is careful to never be caught on the wrong side of the scale.

That is, until she deserts the Crimson, an alliance of vampires, and aligns herself with a rising group of psychics known as the Timewalkers. Less than a week after joining their team of spies, Vel is murdered on a rooftop. She wakes up floating above her own body, with no idea as to who killed her, or why. Her memories from the night of her death have vanished.

Vel may be a ghost. She may be trapped in the body of a fox (the last form she took while she was still alive). But, above all else, she is determined to find out what happened to her on that final night. The danger that has lurked so long in the streets of Gower has finally come for her, and she knows that she will not be able to rest until she discovers the truth (and, maybe, gets some revenge).
